Starting Over After Bankruptcy
Charmaine Bezzina-Cork grew up around construction. Her family were builders. She understood property at an instinctive level, knew how things were put together, and believed for most of her adult life that it was the right vehicle for building long-term security.
She and her husband Greg had invested in property the way most Australians do: on instinct, without a coordinated strategy, relying on personal judgment in a market that does not reward improvisation. They lost it all. When the shares Greg had accumulated through COVID followed, the picture was complete. The couple was bankrupt.
“The fear is the biggest thing that held us back. We lost everything through property because we tried to do it the old-fashioned way.”
For Charmaine, the bankruptcy was harder to process than it might have been for someone without her background. She knew enough about property to understand precisely what had gone wrong. That knowledge did not make her more confident, but instead more afraid.

“You know you’re not alone. That’s been the biggest thing.”

Semi-Retired at 52

Charmaine is 52, with three children. She travels for roughly six months of every year, funds it through cashflow from the portfolio, and describes herself as semi-retired.
